Petitenget Temple, referred to as ‘Pura Petitenget’ by locals, is a significant, centuries-old temple in Bali and one of the very few cultural landmarks at the island’s upscale beach resort area of Seminyak. Somewhat overshadowed by the modern developments of lavish five-star resorts in the area, this temple still remains an important highlight and a must-see while in Seminyak, especially during its festive 210-day anniversaries and the traditional dance rehearsals regularly held by the locals in a grand pavilion nearby.
Red bricks and sandstone make up most of the temple’s architecture, giving it an antique feel. Up the dragon staircase is the temple’s vast courtyard, where a dozen different shrines and small pavilions draped in typical Balinese chequered cloths create an eerie and hallowed sight. Petitenget forms one of the island’s Dang Kahyangan collection of sea temples that spiritually guard the island’s perimeters, initiated by the legendary Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha on his historical mission from neighboring island Java in the 16th century.
Beside this main temple is the smaller Masceti Ulun Tanjung Temple, a temple where the local villagers pray for protection – in historical times, against famine and disease. If you’re lucky and happen to visit Petitenget during its anniversary celebrations, which falls on a ‘Merakih’ Wednesday every 210 days on the Balinese Pawukon calendar, the temple is colorfully adorned with banners and parasols and pilgrims throng for prayers in their best temple attire, naturally making for great photo opportunities. The following dates correspond to the future temple.

Opened in June 2013, its name is a play on the local words meja and kawi – ‘table’ and ‘high’ respectively. Mejekawi occupies the top floor of Ku De Ta’s south-eastern wing and is set to become a distinct part of the enterprise, serving set course degustation menus with items prepared through high-technology methods.
Mejekawi’s central kitchen and a secondary pantry beside the wine cabinets serves as a ‘lab’ for cooking demonstrations, classes, wine tastings, and guest chef dinners, and it features top-of-the-line, high-tech appliances from Sub-Zero & Wolf. The central open kitchen is only steps away from the surrounding tables, which is deliberate and meant to minimize the distance between chef and diners, enabling you to view the exciting process of creation before each fine presentation comes to your table.
The farthest end of the venue allows bird’s eye views over Seminyak beach, and the rolling surf is floodlit from its beachfront lawn, adding dramatic effect to the scene. Mosaic glass panels line the walls, with subtly lit interiors and chic table setups.
Throughout your dining experience, long-time Bali resident and part-time surfer Executive Chef Ben Cross throws in a couple of hidden courses that adds to the element of surprise. Our seven-course treat starts with a unique wooden plate of smoked yogurt spheres on intricately folded salmon strips, and continues with a petite but flavorsome coral trout crevice with Chef Cross’ take on the ‘sambal matah’, a favorites traditional Balinese seafood condiment, which tastes so much better due to his secret substitution of exotic ingredients. Then a couple of surprisingly impromptu servings arrive before our actual third-course ‘sop buntut’ oxtail soup, and the ‘babi guling’ roast pork with smoked potato puree, urap vegetable mix and rendang jus. All are extraordinary takes on local Indonesian dishes; presentation is very modern and Western, and most of the time some selections turn out tastier than the traditional.

Sardine Restaurant Bali is one of the first and foremost dining spots that will catch your eye as you enter Jalan Petitenget from Seminyak’s northern end. Its white stone wall facade conceals much of the treasure within, comprising an impressive bamboo-beamed dining hall with alfresco platforms overlooking probably one of the last rice paddies in Seminyak. The delightful compound is surrounded by leafy bamboo gardens, tranquil ponds, and quirky Balinese-style garden décor of pristine white and chequered parasols.
The interplay of lush green views with the gorgeous Seminyak sunsets serve as perfect prelude to a sumptuous meal. Sardine Restaurant’s visual delights match its impressive menu, which contains a healthy and tasty seafood selection combined with home-grown organic produce. Vegetables, herbs and salads are sourced from Sardine Bali’s very own organic vegetable garden in the village of Bedugul, in the central Bali highlands.
Lounging about on its cozy sofas, crafted from giant bamboo columns, is one of the favorites perks when dining at Sardine Bali. The whole bamboo structure and furnishings is a designer showcase, the brainchild of Burgundy chef-and-interior designer couple Pascal and Pika Chevillot. The whole structure is a delightful and uplifting experience to walk into, especially after ‘escaping’ from the frenetic Seminyak traffic.
Sardine Restaurant Bali’s menu is a regularly changing one, with main ingredients sourced from the freshest morning catch in the fishing village of Jimbaran on the island’s southwest coast. The menu’s creations as referred to as ‘cuisine de soleil’. By and large, as its name suggests, the menu at Sardine Restaurant is seafood-dominant. From pan-seared scallops to grilled lobster or octopus, seafood-lovers will relish in it. What would you go to Sardine for if not for the sardines? One of the chef’s sardine specials comes char-grilled with red ginger rice, baby Chinese cabbage and Japanese ponzu sauce, at IDR 120,000 per serving.
Vegetarians and diners who are not really into seafood can always opt for the meat-and-veggie sections. With fresh organic greens to pair, you know you’re in for a very healthy treat. Locally inspired cocktails, from amazingly refreshing blends of rosella, fruit juices to Bali’s famous arak are listed together with the collection of martinis and wines. Desserts are also ever-changing as with the rest of the menu. The latest additions to please your sweet tooth is the Flores pineapple Carpaccio; or try the sampler option with the mini dessert tasting at IDR 95,000 to enjoy the assortment of Guanaja chocolate fondant, lemon cake with strawberries and candied peanut mousse, mung bean parfait with white chocolate and a ginger crème brulee. Hu’u Bar is among the most celebrated venues on Jalan Petitenget in Seminyak, an area frequently dubbed Bali’s ‘eat street’. Potato Head Beach Club has fast gained popularity as one of the most happening venues in Seminyak, joining the array of world-class hotspots that line this upscale, cosmopolitan coastal village. The venue is next door to the W Retreat, and its access from the main Jalan Petitenget road is similar to W’s, with a long and narrow lane that transports you to a world of drinks, dining and partying on its lawn beachfront.
From the end of the driveway, you’ll see the quirky architecture of the beach club, particularly its trademark towering feature comprising a patchwork of old and worn teakwood window shutters. Petitenget Temple has a wide parking area that La Lucciola Restaurant Bali also shares. From here you can easily access the restaurant by foot via an elegant wooden bridge over a creek, which is subtly lit after sunset. Another way in is simply from the beach side right off the sands of Petitenget, which is convenient for weekenders and families looking for a fine place to dine after enjoying their time out on the beautiful coast.
Upstairs is obviously the most enjoyable spot, with the balcony serving best views and gentle sea breezes making for a great laidback escape from the heat of the day.
Lunch is usually the best time to enjoy the view, but dinners are also great considering you’ve headed there for the sunset. At night, candlelit tables and oil torches glimmer throughout the venue and pathways. Literally ‘the firefly’ in Italian, La Lucciola Restaurant Bali offers an ever changing menu that expatriates and regular diners have seemingly never grown tired of throughout these years.
The usual day here starts off with breakfast, with a dining crowd that is more relaxed and family oriented since many of them go after their morning activities out on the beach. Brunch ensues with tasty selections off the menu comprising bite-size Italian pastries of sweet sfogliatelle with passion fruit crema, or a Verona cream brioche with candied citron and apple.
Biku Restaurant on the famous Jalan Petitenget offers a cool and secluded place to escape the heat of Seminyak, featuring a main dining hall and tea lounge built up from a century-old traditional ‘joglo’ teak house, and decorated with antiques and a collection of books to get lost in over its homemade cuisine and exotic teas and cakes. The restaurant is a well established favourite among expatriates and visitors, and is packed most of the day, especially for its afternoon and high tea specials.
Serving ‘tropical comfort food’ from a menu that offers a wide range of Indonesian and Balinese specialties, Biku Restaurant takes pride in its eclectic selection of daily rotating homemade cakes and desserts. The homey atmosphere and large tables makes it a great go-to for laidback gatherings, and is also good for solitary diners with its small round tables spread out evenly under an open-beam ceiling layout.

The unique tea lounge was also their answer to the lack of places to find high quality cuppas in Bali. Tea time at Biku Restaurant comes in many different choices, with its main selection being the traditional package, comprising a choice of Biku Teas accompanied by scones with jam and cream, finger sandwiches, mini spinach quiches and a selection of sweet treats, all at IDR 105,000 per person. The sandwiches include cucumber, salmon and cream cheese, ham and mustard. The whole presentation is quite impressive, with the morsels served on tiered tea trays, beautifully posh with floral patterns on classically styled porcelain dishes.
If you’re looking for the more relaxed beach vibe at Bali then La Plancha Seminyak is aperfect hotspot for you. No design furniture there, but just bright coloured furniture, happy Asian umbrella’s and beanbags to sit on. La Plancha Seminyak is a perfect beach club to go around 17 o’clock to watch the sundown and chill out with friends. On the menu you find tapas style food, salads and beach food like hamburgers with fries. Perfect to watch the sundown with your feet in the sand, drinking a Bintang beer. The crowd at La Plancha Seminyak is a mix of locals, expats and tourists. At La Plancha Seminyak they also have fun beach parties during the weekends.
Echo Beach is one of Bali’s most recently christened surf spots. The nickname overshadows its local name ‘Pantai Batu Mejan’, after a significant Balinese Hindu sea temple on site. Sharing the serene rice field-landscaped region of Canggu with other wave-riding haunts such as Berawa, Seseh and Pererenan, Echo Beach has become most popular due to its advanced reef breaks, 180-degree seascape and sunsets, and array of delicious seafood cafes set on a high vantage point from where to enjoy it all.
The black-sand beach is approximately 35km northwest of Kuta and Seminyak, and a 14km drive west from the provincial capital of Denpasar. For those staying in one of the many luxury villas in Canggu, such as The Bali Dream Villa Resort, Ametis Villa and the LV8 Resort, this coastal region can be reached by a 45-minute transfer from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban, South Bali.
Past the upscale area of Seminyak, the journey further west takes you to Canggu’s green expanses of paddies, which remain well-kept and tended to by local Balinese villagers.
Echo Beach is at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan, the road originally named after the temple there, but which now has more signposts bearing its new nickname. Before a Balinese-style gateway that opens to a glimpse of the horizon are rows of shacks with surfboards for rent, ding repairs, and a motorcycle parking spot.
This beach is named after a nearby temple. The grey sand creates a mysterious look and tourists rarely come to visit, but since it’s located in a tranquil neighbourhood, this peaceful beach has become an alternative hideout venue from the crowds where you can swim, sunbathe, jog, meditate or meander along the waterfront before sunset.
Trick Art 3D Gallery is a fresh and fun interactive attraction where guests can execute fun poses of all sorts against masterfully crafted murals and paintings to create stunning three-dimensional illusions. There are approximately 80 pieces of life-size and hyper-realistic murals to interact with in the gallery’s collection, from parodied takes on famous and classical paintings, blockbuster movie characters, to fairytale and magical themes.
Trick Art 3D Gallery Bali is the first trick-eye museum on the island, located at the Seminyak end of Sunset Road. Opened in April 2014, this two-storey art space is easy to find opposite Swiss-Belinn Seminyak Hotel.
